I am something of a completionist, and nothing if not ambitious. I am especially determined when it comes to my favourite books and series and films — the ones that effectively changed my worldview.
The Sandman remains a cornerstone for my love of graphic novels. It’s expansive, it’s complex, and finishing it left me with a book hangover that lasted two weeks. Honestly, I’ve never been the same — I’ve never read fantasy fiction the same way since either, and the characters are so special and so important to me, personally, that I couldn’t not make the attempt to pay them some sort of homage.
Back when I first started making magnetic bookmarks for myself about a year ago, we’d just gone into lockdown because of the pandemic, and Truffles & Bedlam was (lol) nothing more than a twinkle in my eye, I looked at my Absolute Sandman editions — the ultra heavy bound copies that perpetually sag the shelf they’re on because they’re so chonky — and I knew I had to “at least draw Dream and Death”.
That’s always how it starts: “I’m just gonna draw these two characters.” Next thing I know I’m eight bookmark designs deep, I’ve been at it for twenty-two hours, and my neck has a crink.
The results have been particularly satisfying for me as a designer, and I’d be remiss to say that because of the art style, they remind me a lot of Jill Thomson’s “Little Endless”, even though it wasn’t my intention to emulate her take on the characters. Death in particular is worlds different. Barnabus is absent from Del’s side. Dream isn’t tripping over his robes. Etc.
Putting this collection together has been a long time in the works. The first time someone bought all the bookmarks in one fell swoop, I realized I wasn’t alone in the need to have them all together, so I hope that this makes it easier for anyone who is, like me, a completionist.
The Endless Epic Collection is available in mini and mega sizes, and contains all eight (8!) magnetic bookmarks in the set: Destiny, Death, Dream (Lord Morpheus), Daniel as the Dream King, Destruction, Desire, Despair, and Delirium.
The really funny thing is that every time I think I’m done, I start wondering if anyone would want to see the Corinthian, or Lucien the Librarian, or Merv Pumpkinhead in this style. I’m also really interested to see what the contemporary take on these characters will look like when the stills from the Netflix series are revealed — particularly how they’re adapted to the modern day. Endless possibilities for the Endless, right?
Let me know what you think in the comments, or who, if anyone, you’d like to see next from this series.
P.S. You can nab them individually too, and we also have some paper stickers for all the characters as well.
